'borrowed' maybe sounds better - either way, all the photographs I use I consider to be brilliant in their individual ways ( & I write in the 'notes' section about how I'd be happy to credit all the photos and remunerate the photographer with a 'cut' of any sale ). I realize these paintings are 'hot' and titillating, as compared to the 'receding' and meditative quality of a landscape painting. Also, I'd guess about 70% of my landscape painting market is female - that market may well go out the window with my 'soft-core' ( as a friend characterized them ) paintings. So I'm not exactly doing this for the $. On top of that, viewers aren't always so open to being presented with juxtapositions of two or more images. Sometimes I suspect I could be pushing the equivalent of a 'mix tape' on people; " These really go together great!"
Another friend glanced at 'Winter 4th of July' and quipped," Wow, the internet is great", implying, I think, that using these photos was common, easy, not genuine. There's truth there - plus that this avalanche of images is awesomely great ! And it'll stop being genuine/real when there's no more internet - to me, it's as real as anything else; how can I not revel in it?
In the 'notes' section, I write about having painted, drawn, many many many real live models - often nude - and about what these spontaneous, beautiful 'internet' images now mean to me -
I guess people do like the idea of a backstory; that it would be more satisfying if these were people I know, have involvement with.
I was worrying about this anonymity - a few years ago - and decided I'd try to hire a model.
The young woman who walked through the door was everything I could've hoped for : beautiful, smart, sweet - utterly un-selfconscious about slipping out of her Summer dress.
Now, I have a girlfriend; I love her, and sex is just fine, thank you very much. I just didn't think I could handle a professional, intimate relationship with this young woman - ( and it would've been an intimate relationship ) ( how could it not be intimate? even if nothing sexual happened - ) without basically everything becoming untenable. And that was the best case scenario.
I think I'm most comfortable with using selfies : young women showing off - look at me! It's pretty innocent; they're not selling themselves, and they're safe. And everyone knows that if you're hot & semi-nude and even send a selfie, let alone post it, it's most likely going to wind up on some website.
